THE OLD COURSECHALLENGE

Golf has been played on Musselburgh Old Course for more than 400 years. It is the earliest continuously played golf course in the world and one of only 14 venues that have been selected to host the Open championship, the greatest golf competition in the world.

However, it has not fared well compared to other golf venues of similar pedigree. The course and facilities needs further investment to truly reflect the heritage and international importance.

Visitors do come and look but are often left confused and disappointed because the experience falls short of their expectations. The Old Course story is just not being told in a meaningful or compelling way.

As a result, the Old Course hasn’t benefitted from the “table of riches” that now exists in the world of golf.

In turn, Musselburgh itself has not been able to capitalise on the fact that it is home to one of the most historically important courses in the world.

THEOPPORTUNITY

The history and heritage of the Old Course has the potential to enthrall and attract players from around the world – if the experience people get when they visit properly reflects the amazing story the course has to tell. Golf is a global sport and attracts significant numbers of wealthy individuals. Many of these players are on the look-out for unique, ‘prestige’ experiences. Properly presented, the Old Course offers just such an experience.

Golf and golfers treasure the heritage of the game. The old course is a missing piece of the jigsaw of golf history. If this story is brought to life and marketed in the right way, it will draw people to the course, giving them pride in having played one of the world’s most historically significant courses. High net-worth individuals are attracted to significant, newsworthy projects, either for philanthropic reasons or for prestige. The re-birth of the Old Course offers them the chance to play their part in preserving one of golf’s most important treasures.

The opportunity therefore exists to create a golf course and visitor experience that will capture the imagination of people from all over the world – providing Musselburgh with a unique tourism offering and reclaiming the town’s rightful place as one of the key destinations for golfers to visit.

THE PROPOSAL

We plan to work in partnership with ELC and other key stakeholders to achieve our vision for Musselburgh Old Course.

We will provide the strategic financial resources and business plan to deliver the following core project elements:

A restored and improved course

Everything possible will be done to recreate the experience of playing on the original course. Drawing on detailed proposals already developed by Tom MacKenzie, of MacKenzie and Ebert International Golf Architects, many of the course’s lost features will be re-introduced and changes made in modern times will be re-modelled. The restored course will be of international standard and will provide a challenging and rewarding experience for golfers of all levels.

Preferential access to current members and Musselburgh locals

Local golfers and current Old Course members will be offered preferential rates to play the course. They will also be provided with high-quality catering and other facilities.

A refurbished clubhouse

The existing Clubhouse will be renovated to create a luxurious and authentic facility that will fully reflect the heritage and prestige of the course. Handpicked, knowledgeable staff will be on hand to provide the highest level of customer service.

A prestigious club

A new club will be set up, designed to attract wealthy golfers from around the world. Members will benefit from international-standard facilities and the prestige that comes from being a custodian of one of golf’s most historically significant courses. The first 120 members will qualify for Founder Membership status.

A unique golf history experience

The whole ambiance of the club and course will bring its history and heritage to life. Staff will be on hand to let visitors know about the great exploits of the past. High-quality interpretation and signage will continue the story. Visitors will even be able to play the course the ‘traditional’ way using hickory clubs. Branded merchandise will further enhance the visitor experience.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

We have a strategic business plan in place for the development of the course. This is based on conservative projections of club membership and on the sustainable, self-financing growth of the enterprise.

The financial elements of these plans have been prepared in conjunction with the chartered accountants, Johnston Carmichael LLP.

Key Areas of Investment

Over the next six years (2017-2022) we plan to invest:

  • £1.8 million in the development and maintenance of the course.
  • £1.6 million on re-fitting and refurbishing the clubhouse and other amenities.
  • £2.8 million in marketing the course and club membership.
  • £3 million on wages and salaries.

Projected financial performance

By year 8 the business should have established full membership of the club and the business itself should be self-sustaining through sale of annual memberships, green-fees, hospitality and merchandising.

CREATING LOCALOPPORTUNITIES

Experience tells us where a town significantly increases their visitors, demand for more services is created. We hope enterprising businesses and individuals will be able to take advantage of the new golf course status and supply the demand the new visitors bring. We will work with local businesses where possible to supply the golf course and cooperate with businesses where we share common goals and purpose.

The project is expected to create 40 new jobs and most of these will be available to the local community.
